  5.   First of all, thanks for downloading Sound Edit.  If you're a novice 
  6. programmer, a semi-serious programmer or a pro, I think there's something in 
  7. this for you.  Like you, my number one goal is to produce quality software.  
  8. That means I need all the high-level tools I can get.  Since I've written 
  9. Sound Edit, its been one of my favorites.  I hope you'll find it as handy as I
  10. do.
  11.   The last game program I bought for my PC came with a menu listing a half 
  12. dozen or so sound boards.  One of those options was the PC speaker.  Since my
  13. machine is a PS/2 and I don't have an extra sound board, I chose the PC speaker
  14. option.  What a drag!  All the sounds were short beeps or bells - very dull 
  15. stuff.  I'm not naming names but this game was from one of the top 
  16. entertainment software companies.  
  17.   Unfortunately this is true for a lot of software.  The PC speaker gets no
  18. respect.  That's too bad since the PC speaker is capable of more than you'd
  19. expect.  It's also the only sound device available on EVERY PC.  This means
  20. software written with PC speaker sound is 100% compatible with everybodys 
  21. machine!  
  22.   Alright, enough fanfare.  While I could go on, let's get down to business.
  23. Sound Edit will allow you to create, edit and save sounds in very small files.
  24. These files can then be used in programs you create to play back the sounds
  25. you've invented.  On-line documentation in Sound Edit gives sample C code
  26. showing how to load and play back a Sound Edit file.  For other languages, 
  27. to help you write a custom playback routine, the data in a Sound Edit file
  28. is described byte for byte.  
  29.   The version of Sound Edit you've received is the Shareware Edition.  This
  30. edition is the same as the registered edition without the ability to save 
  31. files.  For information on ordering the full-featured registered edition press
  32. the Save button.  Several sound files of varying quality were included also.
  33. Try these out from within an application.  You'll see how easy it is to add
  34. sound to any program!
  35.   Finally a utility program, PLAY_SE.EXE is included to allow sounds to be 
  36. played from batch files.
